pendle hill

by thespian @ 2008-04-05 - 11:15:33

i love digging around to find out where words come from, and when i lived in the north west, i was very fond
of pendle hill - a dark and legendary place, full of atmosphere.

but why pendle hill? why not, dark and legendary hill?

well, now i have found out.

pendle is derived from...

pen = an old cumbrian word meaning hill

dle = is a corruption of the old english word hyll (also meaning, hill)

so pendle hill can be roughly translated as

Hill hill Hill

well, i thought it was interesting ...

Maybe because it's the hill of hills. The uber hill.

i used to live near somewhere called Greenhill, which is a much better name for a hill.

Yes that sounds friendly. Pendle sounds dark, brooding. Like Clitheroe. I've always thought dark things must be afoot in Clitheroe.

The 'witches' of Pendle were protecting a Catholic lady of high standing one night. (Catholic persecution at the time). Someone tipped them off to the authorities...and the rest is history...

I have climbed Pendle Hill. I have also had rather a good romp in the forest below!

Last Summer I think and almost got caught starkers by two children straying off the path walking with mother...

my ma used to work at a nursing home called HillBrae, and apparently Brae means hill also, so we always laughed that she worked at Hill Hill, which was actually up the hill from our house!
